Welecome to my personal website! After leaving my last position, I've spent the fall travelling, consulting, and writing articles for the new website I am lauching, Job Shop Lean.

I'm currently looking for a new organization that will allow me to showcase my skills and grow professionally.  I have a strong background in manufacturing, but I am open to new opportunities in other industries or fields in the greater Minneapolis/St Paul and western Wisconsin region.  I'd love to hear about what new opportunies your organization has available.

Trinity Industries - Production Manager

Led operations team of 10 supervisors and 242 direct employees in a $100 million/year sales steel utility pole manufacturing plant. Managed production safety, quality, cost, and delivery, while involved with production scheduling, product development, test operations, continuous improvement, and union relations.

  • Team leader of an Operational Excellence/Kaizen team that eliminated the plant’s largest bottleneck, increased efficiency in our front-end cutting, press brake, and seaming operation by over 20%, and raised overall plant efficiency from 88% to 103% while maintaining a low indirect ratio
  • Handled employee relations, accountability, coaching, union grievances, and was plant representative on two successful union contract negotiation teams
  • Created an hours-based system of capacity and production planning for an extreme high variation, low run engineered job shop implemented division-wide via a SIOP event
  • Provided design proposals and manufacturability insight on a product development team for a quick-connect system to eliminate wind vibration resonance from utility structures, patent pending
  • Protected the company from potential litigation by identifying and correcting 7 major customer contract, legal, public policy, and liability issues as part of the corporate compliance team
  • Increased quality and decreased scrap in our machining departments press brake operation 75% by implementing standard work, revamping key equipment, and implementing administrative controls
  • Revamped safety JSA program for new hires by adding hands-on training and additional behavioral-based safety checks
  • Redesigned key welding and machining elements of job estimating system, and provided feedback on result accuracy to the rest of the estimating team, drastically increasing estimate accuracy
  • Oversaw numerous utility structure load case tests at the only test stand in North America

Trinity Industries (ABB / T&B) - Production Superintendent

Managed day-to-day shop floor of steel utility structures manufacturing plant operations, including hiring, discipline, training, Kaizen and 5s events, ISO 9001/14001/18001 compliance, and maintenance

  • Launched hardware kitting program to organize and reduce the lead time the supply of parts to welding stations in a job-shop environment, reducing waiting by 15%
  • Modernized Lockout Tag-out program by rewriting all procedures, created a hands-on training system, and visual aids at all locations
  • Developed quality system lead double-check checklist and standard work documentation process that reduced quality customer escapes by 25%
  • Team leader of value streaming mapping event that cut lead time of MRO purchasing in half
  • Provided root cause analysis using 8D and A3 methodology for customer escapes
  • Developed visual tools to improve communication between shifts and make sure priorities were being followed
  • Provided workforce planning, staff development, and employee training for plant's transition from a 2 shift to 3 shift operation

Led a team of 14 maintenance technicians and 3 paint, coating, and blast operators over two shifts. Also filled in as loading and shipping supervisor

  • Managed floor layout and machine installation on 4.5 million dollar plant addition project
  • Managed multi-million dollar Pangborn blast retrofit and Kinetic plasma/machining table installations
  • Oversaw large tool crib inventory via Faciliworks CMMS and budgeting of MRO parts and supplies
  • Did time management studies and created standard work in the finishing area

Built custom motorcycle business from the ground up, building bikes and selling parts in 58 countries

  • Managed daily operations, fabrication, quality control, marketing, inventory control, order fulfillment, and logistics management
